Calgary’s Stage 4 Water Restrictions (November 2026): What They Mean for Your Yard and Renovation
From November 4, 2026, the City of Calgary has put city-wide Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions in place for approximately four weeks while crews connect the replacement Bearspaw South feeder main. Here is what the restrictions cover for homeowners and for anyone with landscaping or renovation work under way.
What is not allowed during Stage 4
According to the City, no outdoor water use is permitted. That includes:
- Watering lawns, gardens, trees and shrubs — by sprinkler, automatic irrigation or hand-held hose.
- Watering new sod, seed and young trees or shrubs.
- Washing driveways, sidewalks, windows and other outdoor surfaces, and washing cars outdoors.
- Filling outdoor pools, hot tubs, fountains and decorative features.
Edible food crops can still be watered, but only with a hose fitted with a spring-loaded shut-off nozzle or with a hand-held container.
What it means for construction and renovation
The restrictions also cover building work:
- City (potable) water cannot be used for construction or renovation.
- Concrete can’t be mixed on site with City water. Ready-mix concrete batched at a plant is allowed, but any water used after delivery has to come from a non-potable source.
- Water spray testing is not allowed while Stage 4 is in effect.
If you have a patio, footing or landscaping job booked in the next few weeks, ask your contractor how the restrictions affect the schedule.
Indoor water use
The City is also asking Calgarians to conserve indoors: run dishwashers and washing machines only when full, flush only when needed and keep showers to about three minutes.
Sod and trees planted this fall
Sod, seed and young trees planted this fall can’t be watered while Stage 4 is in effect, and the usual watering allowance for new plantings is on hold. When the City lowers the restriction stage, check which watering rules apply before you start watering again.
How long will it last?
The City says the restrictions are expected to last approximately four weeks from November 4. It has not set a fixed end date, so check the City’s outdoor water restrictions page before watering or washing anything outdoors. Businesses and organizations can ask for an exemption under the Water Utility Bylaw; the City reviews each request and notes that approval is not guaranteed.
