Home/Guides/Patio & Paver Installation in Calgary: What to Plan For

A patio is one of the lower-permit projects in a Calgary backyard, but “lower-permit” does not mean “no planning needed.” What is under the pavers decides whether the patio stays flat and level through years of Calgary freeze-thaw, or starts heaving within a couple of winters.

Does a patio need a permit?

The City of Calgary’s deck permit rules are tied to height: an uncovered deck that is 0.6 m (2 ft) or lower above grade at every point does not need a building permit. A patio laid at ground level has no raised surface, so it generally falls outside those rules.

What you build over the patio is a different matter. A covered deck always needs a building permit, and a detached pergola or gazebo over 10 m² (107 sq ft) needs one too — see our deck permit and garage, shed and gazebo permit guides. Always confirm with the City for your specific property and design before you build.

Why base prep matters more than the pavers

Most patio problems — sunken corners, pavers that rock underfoot, a slope that pools water instead of shedding it — start below the surface, not at the pavers themselves. A properly compacted base that is built up in layers, rather than poured and tamped once, is what keeps a patio flat through Calgary’s freeze-thaw cycles and spring runoff.

Choosing a material

  • Interlocking pavers: individual units that can be lifted and reset if the base ever needs adjusting, with the widest range of colours and patterns.
  • Poured concrete: a single continuous surface, often the lower-cost option for a simple rectangular patio.
  • Natural stone: a higher-end, irregular look that pairs well with retaining walls and garden beds.

Drainage and grading

A patio should slope gently away from the house, not toward it, so runoff does not pool against the foundation. If the patio sits near a retaining wall or a sloped section of yard, plan the grading for the whole area together rather than treating the patio as an isolated pad.

Call before you dig

Excavating for a base can reach buried gas, power and telecom lines, especially near the house. Request a locate through Utility Safety Partners’ Click Before You Dig service at least three working days before digging; responses can take 5 to 10 business days in busy periods, so book early.
