Home/Guides/Deck Railing Height Rules in Calgary

A deck railing is a safety feature first and a design choice second. Calgary ties its railing height rules to the 2019 National Building Code – Alberta Edition, and they apply whenever your deck is high enough to need one. Here is what the City’s guidance says.

Guard height: 0.9 m or 1.07 m

The City of Calgary gives two railing heights, based on how high the deck surface is above the ground next to it:

  • Below 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) above grade: a railing at least 0.9 m (3 ft) high is required.
  • At or above 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) above grade: a railing at least 1.07 m (3 ft 6 in) high is required.

This applies to any deck that is high enough to need a railing in the first place — which, under our deck permit guide, is generally any deck surface built above 0.6 m (2 ft) over grade.

Baluster and opening spacing

Between the rails, the City’s guidance gives a maximum opening of 100 mm (about 4 in) — small enough that a young child cannot pass through. This applies to horizontal and vertical balusters, glass panel gaps and cable railing spacing alike.

Stairs and handrails

The City’s page does not list separate numbers for stair handrails, but it does require an inspection of the deck structure, railing and stairs together once they are built. Railing height and opening spacing are covered under the National Building Code – Alberta Edition 2019, Division B, sections 9.8.8.3 and 9.8.8.5 — your contractor or the City’s inspector can confirm the exact stair details for your project.

Choosing a railing material

All of the following can be built to the same height and spacing rules:

  • Wood: matches a wood deck and is the most affordable to build and repair.
  • Aluminum or metal: low maintenance and holds a clean, modern line.
  • Glass panel: keeps sightlines open, popular on view lots, but needs regular cleaning.
  • Cable: a minimal look, though cable spacing and tension need careful installation to stay code-compliant.
